What Is Branding?

When you think of branding, your mind may first jump to colors, fonts, images/photos, and logos. These elements make up your “brand identity,” chosen specifically to communicate the essence of YOU or your brand. However, the basics of branding extend far beyond just the visual aspects.

Branding, at its core, is about creating a unique identity and perception for a product, service, or company (you) in the minds of consumers. It involves defining and communicating your brand’s core values, personality, and benefits. This process is crucial in establishing a connection with your target audience and differentiating from your competitors. It encompasses your Unique Selling Proposition, which we covered in the last lesson on the basics of branding.

Your Business Name:

If you’re still in the process of choosing a business/brand name, consider this an essential step in the basics of branding. A good name conveys what you do and helps people remember who you are and what your brand stands for. Ensure your name is not too long or hard to pronounce and spell, yet stands out creatively. Incorporating keywords from your research can be invaluable in crafting a name that resonates.

I recommend purchasing the domain (www.yourgreatsite.com) for your business name. It’s wise to check if that brand name is available as a “.com or .co” before finalizing your business name. Domains typically cost around $20 to purchase. Here is a video where I will walk you through how to do this on Siteground, an essential step in the basics of branding: Siteground Domain Tutorial.

Brand Identity:

Your brand identity is a key component of the basics of branding. It includes the visual components of your brand, like your logo, colors, fonts, and imagery. These elements should be used consistently in the design of your digital products to ensure they align with you and your brand. I will guide you through creating a “Brand Kit” in Canva in an upcoming video. This is where you can save your brand colors, logo, and font, which are foundational elements in the basics of branding.

Brand Personality/Tone:

Defining your brand personality is another critical aspect of the basics of branding. Consider how you want your audience to perceive you and the emotions you want to evoke. Whether you aim to be seen as humorous, luxurious, casual, knowledgeable, or direct, your brand’s personality will dictate the voice or tone you present across all brand communications, from email copy to social media posts, to digital product descriptions.

Brand Story:

Your brand story is a powerful differentiation tool that can drive sales and establish your position in the market. It’s about clearly defining your brand’s values, mission, and vision, and consistently communicating your story across various channels. A compelling brand story connects with customers on an emotional level, building relationships that go beyond transactions. Remember, your brand story is not just a marketing strategy; it’s a cornerstone of the basics of branding, essential for building long-lasting relationships with your customers.
