EPISODE BLOG – SLO FUNNEL BREAKDOWN
In the world of digital marketing, one of the most powerful strategies I’ve implemented in my business is the Self-Liquidating Offer (SLO) funnel. If you’re looking to scale your online brand while keeping your marketing sustainable, this is for you. I’m going to break down exactly how I use an SLO funnel to convert a $22 sale into $480—consistently. Whether you’re a seasoned entrepreneur or just starting, understanding the ins and outs of an SLO funnel can be a game-changer for your business.
What is an SLO Funnel?
An SLO funnel is a marketing strategy where you offer a low-ticket product (usually priced between $7 and $47) upfront to cover the cost of acquiring leads. The beauty of an SLO funnel is that, with the right setup, it doesn’t just pay for itself—it can also generate profit on the front end. But the real magic happens with the backend offers, where you can guide customers through a series of logical, value-packed upsells.
Why Should You Use an SLO Funnel?
If you’ve been relying on freebies to build your list, it’s time to consider the benefits of selling a low-ticket product instead. While freebies attract leads, an SLO funnel attracts buyers—people who are already comfortable with making a purchase and are more likely to continue buying from you in the future. This is especially important if you’re running ads because you want to recoup those costs as quickly as possible. An SLO funnel allows you to do just that while building a list of engaged, high-quality leads.
My SLO Funnel Breakdown
I start with a low-priced, high-value digital product—my Brand and Online Business Toolkit—priced at $22. This toolkit is packed with resources that help entrepreneurs build a profitable, sustainable brand. It’s designed to provide immediate value, so customers feel like they’re getting a steal, which makes it almost an impulse buy.
Step 1: Front-End Offer
The $22 Brand and Online Business Toolkit serves as the front-end offer. It includes valuable tools and resources for brand building, business management, and strategic growth. By offering something that immediately solves a problem, I make it easier for people to say “yes” and move forward in the funnel.
Step 2: Order Bump
As customers check out, I offer an order bump—a related product at a slightly higher price point. In my case, it’s a $27 resource that complements the toolkit. The conversion rate on this order bump is consistently around 60%. This simple addition turns a $22 sale into a $49 sale without adding much friction to the process.
Step 3: One-Time Offer (Upsell)
Once someone completes their purchase, they’re presented with a one-time offer for a $97 course that builds on the toolkit. This is where I get even more strategic. The key is to offer something that naturally follows from the original purchase. Since my customers are already interested in building a profitable brand, the upsell is an easy yes for about 10% of buyers. Even if only 1 out of 10 customers take the upsell, that’s a significant revenue boost.
Step 4: Backend Offer
For those who pass on the first upsell, I offer a final chance to join my coaching membership. While I don’t expect everyone to opt in, I use this opportunity to explain the long-term value of having direct access to me as they implement the strategies from the toolkit and course. This backend offer can turn a single purchase into an ongoing relationship, increasing the customer’s lifetime value.
The Psychology Behind It
The success of an SLO funnel lies in the psychology of purchasing behavior. Once a customer has said “yes” to the initial offer, they’re more likely to continue saying “yes” to related offers, especially if they see the added value. This is known as a “buying frenzy.” The key is to structure your funnel in a way that feels seamless and logical—each offer should be a natural extension of the previous one.
Key Takeaways for Building Your Own SLO Funnel
- Make the Front-End Offer Irresistible: Your low-ticket product needs to provide immediate, tangible value. If it’s not selling, add more value until it becomes a no-brainer.
- Use an Order Bump: A small additional offer during checkout can significantly increase your average order value with minimal effort.
- Offer a Logical Upsell: Make sure your upsell complements the initial purchase. Think of it like McDonald’s asking if you want fries with your burger—it should feel like a natural next step.
- Backend Offers Matter: Use your thank you page and follow-up emails to introduce customers to your higher-ticket offers and ongoing services.
- Test and Tweak: Every audience is different, so it’s crucial to experiment with pricing and offers until you find the sweet spot that works for your business.
Conclusion
An SLO funnel is a powerful tool for online entrepreneurs looking to scale their businesses sustainably. Not only does it cover your lead acquisition costs, but it also allows you to build a relationship with your customers and guide them through a series of offers that increase their lifetime value. If you haven’t yet built your own SLO funnel, now is the time to start!
